MIA-Fest Stage 2011

February 9, 2011 Halifax, Nova Scotia – During the 2011 East Coast Music Awards in Charlottetown, Music Nova Scotia will present 7 Nova Scotian artists over three nights on the MIA Fest stage on April 14, 15, and 16. MIA Fest is a partnership between the ECMAs and the MIAs (music industry associations) of all four Atlantic Provinces (Music New Brunswick, Music Nova Scotia, Music PEI, and Music Newfoundland & Labrador). MIA Fest will host three evenings of incredible showcases during the East Coast Music Awards in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, featuring a great selection of some of the best acts from each provincial MIA. The venue for these shows will be Murphys Community Centre, 200 Richmond Street, Charlottetown,Prince Edward Island, Canada C1A 1J2.

Carleton Stone

Dripping with sweat and covered in proverbial stardust, Carleton Stone’s live show will leave you believing this front man was born onstage. Synced like a well-oiled machine, the dynamic hook-rock quintet gains more and more momentum as their electrifying shows take Canada by storm. With a complete, super charged E-Street orchestration, yoked to the lyrical wit and conviction of a Ryan Adams or Elvis Costello, Carleton Stone Drives the Big Wheel has concocted the perfect hit-maker balance of passion, originality and relentless live energy.

Lingering somewhere amidst the rich, soulful roots of traditional Cape Breton music and the grooves of a thousand branches of rock and funk, Colin Grant embarks on his latest project: a dynamic and thoughtful mingling of beats and melodies from an extensive host of musical influences. Far from the awkward malaise of mohawked bag-pipers and kilted punks, the Colin Grant Band has created a kind of Celtic fusion that is as much Steely Dan and Yes as it is Ashley MacIsaac.

With his latest recording, Turn Time Off, David Myles again delivers on his reputation as a versatile artist with a knack for straddling genres. A smooth, soul-infused pop record that pays tribute to crooners and lovers alike, Turn Time Off shows a further maturing of David Myles the songwriter with .smart heartfelt lyrics and memorable melodies. Turn Time Off was produced by acclaimed Nova Scotia musician Joel Plaskett.

 

 

Ghettochild

Paul Smith was born and raised in Halifax’s North End Community of Uniacke Square. From a young age he involved himself in anything music related from pageants and community events as a child to battles and ciphers on the corners and in clubs as he grew up. Taking the stage name Ghettochild, he along with fellow Squaretown artists AWOL, T Bone D and Jordan Croucher (JRDN) created the scene changing group NEP. NEP released many mix tapes together before eventually branching out as solo artists. As well as performing and recording as a solo artist, Ghettochild was later a part of the group Heavy Spittaz, gaining Canada-wide exposure for their hype sound and performance style. Ghettochild has released three mix tapes as a solo artist, 2003’s “Haligonian”, 2005’s “The Fax of Life” and 2007’s “Time to Get Serious”. Ghetto took his last mix tape title and ran with it spending the next three years working with award winning producers Classified, Tone Mason, Kuya Productions and other local up and comers to create and perfect his debut album, titled “In the Making”, released in 2010.

 

 

Molly Thomason

Molly Thomason’s award nominated debut CD (2009)Through the Static has provided several ECC top ten singles, including #1’s. She was a semi finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. Her song People Lie was selected to be a Viewfinders (Atlantic Film Festival) video. Favorite venues: The Carleton, Metro Centre (Halifax for Haiti), New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee, and Stanfest.

Throwing down their high-energy danceable tunes, the Cape Breton trio fuses ska, reggae, hip hop, and classic house influences with their unique brand of funky rock and roll. Having spent the past ten years infiltrating the Canadian live music scene, Slowcoaster has firmly established themselves as one of the country’s most popular jam rock bands.

 

 

Tanya Davis

Tanya Davis is a poet who makes music. She can count amoung her fans Stuart MacLean and Roger Ebert and, on the heels of two acclaimed independent releases, she launches her 3rd album, Clocks and Hearts Keep Going, in November 2010. Produced by Jim Bryson, it highlights Tanya's creative musicianship; her soft, warm voice; and her poignant lyrical expression.

 

Music Nova Scotia will also be presenting other artists over the weekend at ECMA. The following artists will be presented at The Selkirk Stage, located in the Delta Prince Edward on Thursday April 14 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm.

Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers are primarily a folk group with major jazz and Eastern European influences. Their music has flavours of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and European folk traditions. They tend to enter a song through the backdoor and do the unexpected. They are known for powerful vocals.

Armed with a clear voice and honest word, Kelly’s music resonates with diverse audiences.
