As Associate Director, Writer/Publisher Relations at Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), Brandon Haas knows a thing or two about publishing and careers in songwriting. Before landing at BMI, Haas earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Business/Management from the Berklee College of Music and, more recently, worked as an Artist Development Representative for Interscope/Geffen/A&M Octone Records.  At BMI, he is responsible for recruiting and retaining songwriters, composers and music publishers.

With modest but ambitious beginnings as an independent musician, Darren Gallop over the last fifteen years has achieved success as everything from record label owner, recording studio proprietor and engineer, to record producer and software design CEO. Ed Ward - Milwaukee Irish Fest

Ed Ward is the Founder of Milwaukee Irish Fest, North. America's largest celebration of Irish music and culture, now entering it's 32nd year. Ed has over 35 years in the music business having been a musician, concert promoter, record distributor in addition to festival director. He is also the Founder of the Milwaukee Irish Fest Foundation and the Ward Irish Music Archives- the largest collection of Irish/Celtic and Irish American music in the U.S. Ed is a First Vice President with the investment firm Morgan Stanley where he has worked forth past 26 years as a Financial Advisor and Portfolio Manager. He has a law degree from Marquette University and is a Certified Financial Planner. He continues to serve on the Irish Fest board and its Executive Committee and is Co-chair of the Entertainment Committee and the New Media Committee.

Greg Van Bastelaar - FACTOR

Greg Van Bastelaar’s career began in 2001 by studying Recorded Music Production at The Trebas Institute Of Toronto. It was there that he met world-renowned Songwriter/Producer Justin Gray. A relationship was struck and his time at Big Boom Entertainment resulted in a phenomenal experience working directly in the creation of music.

2006 brought an exciting opportunity with Warner Music Canada, working directly under the General Manager of Warner Chappell Music Canada. During this time, a wealth of contacts were added to Greg's network and he quickly became a mainstay on the local Toronto music scene.

Greg eventually jumped at the chance to work for The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings (FACTOR). This environment plugged him directly into the heart of the Canadian independent music industry, allowing him to develop key relationships as well as to help the industry thrive as a whole.

Grímur AtlasonFestival Manager, Iceland Airwaves (Iceland)

Grímur Atlason is the new manager of the Iceland Airwaves music festival. Not only has he been working as a promoter in Iceland, but also managed several bands over the years. Artists he has worked with include Marc Almond, Happy Mondays, Emiliana Torrini, FM Belfast, Antony and The Johnsons, Blonde Redhead, Lisa Ekdahl, Kim Larsen, Retro Stefson, Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, Television, The Fall, Morrissey and many more. He is also the former mayor of the towns Dalabyggð and Bolungarvík.

Jason Furman - Agent - S.L. Feldman & Associates
     
A graduate from the University of Western Ontario with an honours degree in Political Science, Jason originally began a career in politics where he worked as a Youth Co-chair for the former Deputy Prime Minister John Manley.  Not completely satisfied with his career path, Jason changed directions and attended the Harris Institute for the Arts where he graduated with a certificate in Recording Arts Management.  And so began his career in the music industry.  He has since been an agent for SLFA where he primarily specializes in contemporary music and is responsible for an active roster that includes; Classified, Shawn Desman, Keshia Chante, Karl Wolf, These Kids Wear Crowns, Skratch Bastid and many more.

Jen Rogers - Six Shooter Records

Jen Rogers works with Jenn Grant as part of her Six Shooter management team. She has worked with Six Shooter Records since 2008, and she agrees completely that “Life is Too Short to Listen to Shitty Music.” She is also responsible for the label’s music licensing. Jen has a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University. She is an avid music fan and concert-goer and has built her CD collection steadily since her time working as Store Manager at CD Warehouse in Ottawa. She rarely misses an Ottawa Blues Festival or a nearby Wilco show.

John FellArts Coordinator: The Moseley Folk Festival & The Mostly Jazz Festival

After managing a medical company at the age of 23, John left to pursue his passion for music. Having toured with bands throughout his education and working life he now holds the position of Arts Co-ordinator for two UK festivals. The Moseley Folk Festival, based in Birmingham, offers an unique setting for international folk acts to play along side the best upcoming acts from around the world whilst The Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul Festival brings together a host of Jazz inspired music spanning across many genres!

He is still involved with touring bands (Goodnight Lenin) and aims to mentor younger musicians within the Birmingham region to help with their development.

John is interested in creating depth at both events he is involved with by focusing on new talent and the thriving street art within Birmingham.

Justin Bridgewater (US) - The Agency Group (New York Office)

Justin Bridgewater is an agent at The Agency Group (New York), where he has worked for the past 6 years.  He currently represents a roster of 25 artists in North America, as well as many of them in S. America, Australia, Japan and the Pacific Rim.  His roster is diverse in genres with acts such as: Four Year Strong, Murder by Death, mewithoutYou, Bad Rabbits, Rich Aucoin, Rocky Votolato, God Is An Astronaut, Envy and Body Language, among others.

Prior to becoming an agent, Justin worked as an assistant to Nick Storch at Face the Music Touring for a year and a half and then at The Agency Group for another 3 years.  He also has experience as a concert promoter, as he was the coordinator of MACRoCk (Mid-Atlantic College Radio Conference) while he earned his Bachelor’s degree at James Madison University, where he booked such acts as: Sufjan Stevens, Coheed and Cambria, of Montreal, Mates of State, Fugazi, Animal Collective, Dashboard Confessional and many others.  He also was the Business Manager, Assistant Program Director and a DJ at the university’s 24-hour, student-run radio station WXJM.

Kat Morris - Operations Manager: The Great Escape Festival

Kat is the Operations Manager for The Great Escape. The Great Escape takes place every May and is now firmly established as Europe's most important showcase festival and music industry convention. A total of 15,000 industry and festival goers invade the seaside town of Brighton with showcases taking place in 30 walk-able venue over the 3 days. The weekend features inspiring seminars, networking parties and plenty of new music.

Kelsey McLaren - Director, Artists' Legal Information Society

Kelsey McLaren is a director of the Artists Legal Information Society (ALIS), an organization of law graduates and students who offer legal information to artists in Nova Scotia. She graduated from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University in 2011, and is currently articling with Pink Larkin in Halifax. While at law school, she was the President of the Intellectual Property Law Association at Dalhousie and the Program Coordinator for Pro Bono Students Canada. Before law school, she worked as a Production Editor with a local book publisher.

Kieran Roy - General Manager: Arts and Crafts

As General Manager of Arts & Crafts, Kieran plays a key role in the development of some of Canada's leading independent artists.  He serves as manager to Jason Collett, Zeus, and Dan Mangan, calling on a wealth of industry knowledge and business savvy to provide guidance in all aspects of the artists' careers.  He oversees sales and marketing for the label and plays a key role in new business development.  In addition, Kieran is responsible for music licensing, liaising with music supervisors, agencies and producers to actively pitch the company’s label and publishing assets for film, television and advertising placements.  Prior to joining A&C, Kieran spent six years at Sony BMG as an artist marketing manager.

Liana White - Director of Administration and Services, Canadian Federation of Musicians

Liana White has worked for AFM (Canada) since 1996.  White was the Artist Immigration Administrator before being promoted to her current position: Director of Administration and Services. 

In her position as Director of Administration and Services, White oversees the AFM’s Immigration Department, in addition to the overall administrative functions of the AFM’s Canadian Office [now operating in Canada as Canadian Federation of Musicians (CFM)]. 

During her tenure with AFM overall, White has gained a multitude of industry-related experience and is very understanding of the needs of musician’s today.

Marie-Alicia ChangCo-Founder and Head of Business Development, Music Metric (UK)

Marie-Alicia is co-founder at UK technology start-up musicmetric, a company delivering detailed analytics to the music industry. Marie-Alicia’s role is to help bridge the gap between new technology and the music industry. Her passion is music and is an artist in her own right with many projects on the go. Her experience in other media includes working in business development for leading film and television software company KAI, plus years working as a live event promoter giving her a unique and well-rounded insight into the industry.

Mark Thomas - Product Director, BuzzDeck, AWAL (UK)

Mark joined the AWAL team in October 2008. Having studied the Tonmeister degree in Music and Sound Engineering, he spent a year mixing film sound tracks for Technicolor. In 2006 he became a freelance web developer, later co-founding SolarBerry Interactive Media Ltd. Here Mark specialised in interactive development. He jumped at an opportunity to join AWAL as it drew together both his musical background and online experience. He has since conceived and led development of the BuzzDeck platform.

Disgusted by our failure to have settled the moon by 2001 Matthew Hall gave up on Aerospace and made a career in promoting, DJing & booking live music in London, England. Running the popular Soho showcase White Heat and the Lexington in Kings Cross keeps his mind from humanities failures. In his spare time Matthew is a keen pilot & enjoys investing in things you dig or pump from the ground & things you fire into space.

Dr. Michael Geist - Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce law, University of Ottawa

Dr. Michael Geist is a law professor at the University of Ottawa where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law.  He has obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees from Cambridge University in the UK and Columbia Law School in New York, and a Doctorate in Law (J.S.D.) from Columbia Law School.  Dr. Geist is an internationally syndicated columnist on technology law issues with his regular column appearing in the Toronto Star and the Ottawa Citizen. 

Dr. Geist is the editor of From "Radical Extremism" to "Balanced Copyright": Canadian Copyright and the Digital Agenda (2010) and In the Public Interest:  The Future of Canadian Copyright Law (2005), both published by Irwin Law, the editor of several monthly technology law publications, and the author of a popular blog on Internet and intellectual property law issues. Dr. Geist serves on many boards, including the Canarie Board of Directors, the Canadian Legal Information Institute Board of Directors, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s Expert Advisory Board, the Electronic Frontier Foundation Advisory Board, and on the Information Program Sub-Board of the Open Society Institute. He has received numerous awards for his work including the Kroeger Award for Policy Leadership and the Public Knowledge IP3 Award in 2010, the Les Fowlie Award for Intellectual Freedom from the Ontario Library Association in 2009, the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Pioneer Award in 2008, Canarie’s IWAY Public Leadership Award for his contribution to the development of the Internet in Canada and he was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2003.  In 2010, Managing Intellectual Property named him on the 50 most influential people on intellectual property in the world.

Noémi Westergard - Director, Artists' Legal Information Society

Noémi Westergard is a director of the Artists’ Legal Information Society (ALIS) and is currently working as an article clerk with the law firm of Blois, Nickerson & Bryson in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She graduated from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University in 2011. Prior to coming to law school, she worked for several years in the film industry in a wide variety of roles both on set and in the production office, as well as doing background casting for a few years. She also received a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of King’s College in 2006, focusing mainly on television and documentary filmmaking, and landed an internship at Robert Greenwald Productions in Los Angeles.

Pat Leyland - Taylor Mitsopulos Klein Oballa

Actively involved in the Canadian music industry for over a decade, Pat has been working with the lawyers of Taylor Mitsopulos Klein Oballa since the law firm opened its doors in March 2006. After completing his legal education at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, Pat articled with the firm and was called to the bar in 2008. Previously, he gained valuable experience while at the entertainment law firm Sanderson Taylor. Pat began his career in the music industry as a guitarist and co-writer in the southern Ontario-based modern rock band left Pencey. While paying their dues as an independent band, the members of left Pencey started working with Chris Taylor and manager Chris Smith (Nelly Furtado). Shortly thereafter, left Pencey signed a recording deal with U.S. major label Arista Records and spent the summer of 2002 recording their (never to be released) debut album with producer Brad Wood (Liz Phair, Smashing Pumpkins). Although the band dissolved, Pat applies the lessons learned during this period on a daily basis. He also continues to write and perform music.

Sari Delmar - President: Audio Blood Media

Sari Delmar got her start in the industry at a young age as a freelance writer for top music publications such as Exclaim! and Clash Magazine (UK). She has worked for a number of major Canadian companies within the industry including positions at Wind-Up Records Canada, Third Estate Merchandise, Nevado Records, and Rebel Music Publicity and Promotions; all the while maintaining Audio Blood and helping out artists on the side. Before long, Audio Blood bands started gathering steam and required more full-time attention, prompting her to take on Audio Blood full time at the beginning of 2009. Through her extensive past, Sari has created and maintained working relationships with hundreds of media outlets across Canada as well as many key players in the Canadian music industry. Aside from running Audio Blood, Sari founded an artist management company, New Rose, in 2010. She manages up and coming artists The Balconies and Sandman Viper Command. Sari has worked projects in the past for the likes of Gaslight Anthem, Duran Duran, ZZ Top, People In Planes, Finger Eleven, The Stanfields, and more. Tim Hardy - Member & Industry Relations Executive – Atlantic Region, SOCAN

Tim Hardy has worked with SOCAN in a variety of positions within their Licensing & Membership Departments in both its Head Office in Toronto and its Atlantic Canadian Office based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, since 1995. Tim’s current role with SOCAN (Member & Industry Relations Executive – Atlantic Region) has him based in Dartmouth, but on the road throughout Atlantic Canada. The Member Relations role allows Tim to work with songwriters, composers and music publishers, as well as industry associations and key influencers within the region, spreading the word about SOCAN and its role within the Canadian music industry. The Industry Relations role allows Tim to work directly with many industry associations in Atlantic Canada (Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses, Chambers of Commerce, Hospitality Associations, Restaurant Associations, etc.) whose membership is affected by SOCAN licensing. Tim also does numerous presentations and workshops throughout the region discussing SOCAN, copyright, performing rights and the SOCAN Foundation.
