The keynote interview will address the new economics of the music industry and provide first hand information on the development of the industry in China. This change in programming does not affect the schedule and will take place on Saturday, November 6 at 10:00 AM at the Rodd Grand Yarmouth.

5. Showcase Performance Replacement
There have been some slight changes in the showcase lineup due to conflicting schedules. Please note the following changes:

6. How to play the Late Night Suite
Every year, Music Nova Scotia hosts a coveted late night suite in the host hotel during Molson Canadian Nova Scotia Music Week. Bands will be programmed to play the night away in the Rodd Grand after official showcases have ended. The only question is “How do I get my band on that stage?”
Every morning between the hours of 9AM and 11AM, a ballot box will be set up inside The New Music Experience educational conference on Friday and Saturday. Simply fill out a ballot and enter the name of your band. At 11PM the names will be collected and a lineup will be posted in the hallway outside of the conference.
The late night signup is only available to those who attend the conference, and there are no guarantees your band will be scheduled. In the words of Jonny Stevens, “You need to soar with the eagles if you want to hoot with the owls”. Or as Scott Long says, “If you want to hoot with the owls, you need to eat MacDonald’s for lunch.”

1. Only three days left to submit to the BIH 5 Minute Pitch Sessions and International Speed Meetings
The popular Bringin' it Home Buyers Program 5 Minute Pitch provides artists the opportunity to pitch their music, or the music of the artist(s) they represent, to a room full of buyers for exactly five minutes (or less). Those selected to pitch can talk, dance, play a song or jump around in circles - whatever creative way artists can come up with to make themselves seem interesting and stand out in a crowd. Pitching sessions will take place during Molson Canadian Nova Scotia Music Week at Haley's Lounge on the mornings of Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6.

This year brings The New Music Experience, a series of educational panels focusing on the changes and challenges facing the music industry today, the future of social media, economics, touring the UK and branding. The New Music Experience will feature top music business professionals from all over the globe to help ensure Nova Scotia’s thriving music scene stays current, informed and prepared.
The conference kicks off with the Speed Meetings, which will provide export level artists the opportunity to take part in a whirlwind series of one-on-one meetings with selected buyers. Artists will have the chance to meet and charm more than 20 buyers over the course of two hours. This event is taking place in The Rodd Grand Yarmouth Convention Centre on the afternoon of Thursday, November 4.
Also part of the conference this year are the popular Bringin’ it Home Buyers Program 5 Minute Pitches, providing artists the opportunity to pitch their music, or the music of the artist(s) they represent, to a room full of buyers for exactly five minutes (or less). Those selected to pitch can talk, dance, play a song or jump around in circles - whatever creative way artists can come up with to make themselves seem interesting and stand out in a crowd. There will be one vocal mic, several DI's and absolutely no sound-checks or drummers allowed. Pitching sessions will take place at Haley's Lounge on the mornings of Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6.
Applicants will be selected for either a 5 Minute Pitch or placement in the Speed Meetings based on the information provided in the application as well as their professional history and export-readiness. The application deadline is October 8 at 5pm. Only complete applications received on time through the online system will be considered and all applicants must be current members of Music Nova Scotia. Successful applicants will be contacted by MNS via email no later than October 22 to confirm time and placement. Music Nova Scotia is also pleased to announce Carlo Scarampi, Francesca Neumann, Gary McClarnan, Shain Shapiro, and Fraser Hill have been added to the list of international delegates. Venues this year include The Rodd Grand Yarmouth Convention Centre, Haley’s Lounge, Dooly’s, Rudder’s Seafood Restaurant and Brew Pub, The Thirsty Fisherman (Rodd Colony), Th’YARC, The Mariners Centre, Red Cap Restaurant, Twin Village Social Club, Wedgeport Legion, and Église St-Michel. With the majority of the showcase venues located in the downtown core of Yarmouth, delegates have the ability to hop from showcase to showcase quickly and easily in order to take in as much of this year’s talent as possible.
Music Nova Scotia is pleased that 2010 will be the first year for three full nights of showcase programming, rather than the traditional two. Jenn Grant, Thom Swift, Christina Martin, Glory Glory Man United, Carmen Townsend, and In-Flight Safety will kick off music week with a bang as they demonstrate their export level talent to internationals and delegates at Haley’s Lounge on Thursday, November 4. Also programmed on Thursday is this year’s loud stage, taking place at Dooly’s, which is conveniently located just steps from The Rodd Grand Yarmouth. The pool tables will be removed to make way for this high energy showcase, featuring Obsydian, Orchid's Curse, Last Call Chernobyl, Broken Ohms, and Black Moor.
On Friday the 5th, catch the highly anticipated finale of Music Nova Scotia’s Battle of the Bands: HMV Next Big Thing at the Rodd Grand Yarmouth Convention Centre, where the five finalists will battle it out in front of MAMA Group’s Jim Benner to claim their spot on an HMV Next Big Thing stage in London, UK, in February, 2011. To date, Three Sheet, The Stogies, Slowcoaster, and Carmen Townsend have all won preliminary round titles, and they will be joined by the winner of the fifth and final round, taking place tonight at The Seahorse Tavern at 10 PM.
2009 was the first year Acadian programming had been included in the festival programming, and Music Nova Scotia proudly partners with Conseil acadien de Par-en-Bas, Musique de le Baie and FéCANE in 2010 to present some of the top Acadian musicians in Nova Scotia for a series of showcases spanning three days in five venues. The Thirsty Fisherman (Rodd Colony), Red Cap Restaurant in Middle West Pubnico, Twin Villages Social Club in Amirault’s Hill, Église St-Michel in Wedgeport, and the Wedgeport Legion will host a number of culturally diverse Acadian acts spanning four local communities to ensure those in surrounding areas have the opportunities Music Nova Scotia and their partners have helped to provide.
With 104 performances and more delegate than ever before, 2010 is the best year possible for Bullfrog Power to partner with Music Nova Scotia to ensure the energy used at the event is 100% green. Music Nova Scotia makes waves, not carbon footprints.

Music Nova Scotia Gala Awards Show Lineup Announced
September 16, 2010 Halifax, Nova Scotia – Steve Patterson, comedian and host of The Debaters on CBC Radio and singer/songwriter Christina Martin will co-host the Music Nova Scotia Gala Awards Show in Yarmouth taking place Sunday, November 7 as part of Molson Canadian Nova Scotia Music Week. The Gala Awards Show is the grand finale of music week and will feature a wide range of talented Nova Scotian artists including Wintersleep, Jordan (JRDN) Croucher, The Cottars, The Stanfields, David Myles, Chelsea Nisbett, The Keats, Alert the Medic, HavanaFax, and local Yarmouth and Acadian Shores musicians from the Musique de la Baie program.

Since the 2007 release Welcome to the Night Sky, Wintersleep has been performing steadily throughout North America and Europe. After gathering digital folders with song ideas marked by the city in which they were born “… LA, Seattle, Milan, Belfast, in Japan, Stellarton cottage, Hamilton ON…,” the band got together in a Montreal studio to fit all of the pieces together. The result, influenced by “family, touring, books, salt water…,” is Wintersleep’s fourth album, New Inheritors, which is nominated for Music Nova Scotia’s Album of the Year, Group Recording of the year, and Pop/Rock Group/Artist Recording of the Year.
Emerging Canadian R&B/hip-hop star Jordan Croucher is making up for a late start in his music career in a big way with the soulful songs from his forthcoming second album. The 13-track record spawned the hit singles and videos “Selfish Times,” “Feelin’ Fine,” “So Addicted,” “Won’t Let Go” and “It’s Raining.” It also earned Croucher a CBC Galaxie Rising Star prize, an East Coast Music Award nomination and an appearance on the CBC Television special, Barenaked East Coast Music. He toured across Canada with the likes of Maestro and opened for such international stars as Ne-Yo, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, Nas and Juelz Santana.
Things evolve. It’s simply a form of growth. The Cottars have come a long way, starting as children performing to a hometown audience, through their teen years when they toured the world and shared stages with the biggest names in the business. Now they have evolved again, into young adults, mature in their skills with new faces and outlooks. Even with their relative youth still apparent, it seems that The Cottars have been a part of Canada’s East Coast music scene for years. They have the nominations and the hardware to prove it, including East Coast Music Awards and Music Nova Scotia Awards. They have the road record to prove it as well: tours throughout Canada, shows in Europe and thirty-eight U.S. states, two tours of Japan and appearances at major festivals around the world. This quartet, Ciarán and Fiona, Claire and Bruce, has become the evolutionary culmination that is now The Cottars. Feast is their fourth CD, extending and expanding The Cottars’ music without ever losing track of their roots. Their roots show through clearly when they dust off something old and masterfully link it with something more contemporary.
Meet The Stanfields, a maelstrom of rock ‘n’ roll, Celtic and bluegrass. Hailing from the gritty post-industrial towns of Nova Scotia, The Stanfields play every show like it’s their collective last night on earth. Their kitchen party harmonies, thunderous rhythm section, high-octane stage show and genuine chemistry have won over audiences clear across the nation. Their latest release, Vanguard of the Young and Reckless, has earned them six Music Nova Scotia Award nominations including Album of the Year, Alternative Artist/Group Recording of the Year, Group Recording of the Year, Digital Artist of the Year, Music Video/DVD of the Year, and Bell Aliant Entertainer of the Year.
With his latest recording, Turn Time Off, David Myles again delivers on his reputation as a versatile artist with a knack for straddling genres. A smooth, soul-infused pop record that pays tribute to crooners and lovers alike, Turn Time Off shows a further maturing of David Myles the songwriter with smart heartfelt lyrics and memorable melodies. Turn Time Off was produced by acclaimed Nova Scotia musician Joel Plaskett and has earned Myles nominations for Bell Aliant Entertainer of the Year, Folk Artist/Group Recording of the Year, Male Artist Recording of the Year, and SOCAN Songwriter of the Year.
Halifax based artist Chelsea Nisbett creates a new sound infusing acoustic rock, R&B and soul. All this coupled with her soul-touching lyrics makes for nothing short of a truly captivating songwriter and performer. Jordan Warford (Editorial Manager of www.guitartips.com.au) has commented: “If there were three words to sum up this inspiring artist, they would have to be integrity, class, and passion. Chelsea Nisbett is a new talent recently merging into the music industry. She brings with her a refreshing outlook on life and a tremendous aptitude for music that has been refined over recent years.” Nisbett’s release Anchored Roots has earned her nominations for Inspirational Artist/Group Recording of the Year, Urban Recording of the Year, and Female Recording of the Year.
2010 East Coast Music Award nominees for Best Country Recording, The Keats, Jolene & Sharlene, continue to wow Country Music fans globally with their powerful blend of two-part harmonies and high energy performances. Hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, the twin sisters' debut single, "Give Me a Ring" rapidly became a regular feature on Canadian Country Music Television (CMT.ca). Their playful personalities and outstanding musicianship have charmed audiences from Prince Edward Islands’ The Cavendish Beach Music Festival to Alberta's Big Valley Jamboree as well as Afghanistan, where they entertained our combat troops. Topping off their summer tour schedule, The Canadian Country Music Association has selected them for the CCMA's New Artist Showcase at Country Music Week 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta. Keep and eye out for The Keats!
Alert the Medic has released We, the Weapon, which received 2010 East Coast Music Award nominations for Sirius Satellite Rock Recording of the Year and Vibe Creative Group Single of the Year for "Atlas", the debut release from the album. “Atlas” achieved national rotation for over 14 weeks and cracked Mediabase's Top 50 Active Rock Canadian Charts. Their follow-up single, “Aid The Getaway”, garnered the #1 spot on East Coast Countdown and the group was selected to perform at JunoFest 2010 alongside fellow rockers, The Arkells. Alert the Medic continues to make waves with We, the Weapon, which has been nominated for Music Nova Scotia’s Group Recording of the Year and Pop/Rock Artist/Group Recording of the Year.
HavanaFax was formed in 2002 when professional musicians in Havana and Halifax who were working with the Los Primos cultural exchange project got together in the Jazz Café in Havana. The following summer they came together in Nova Scotia and recorded HavanaFax Live which won the 2004 ECMA for Jazz Recording of the year as well as the Music Nova Scotia Jazz/Blues Artist/Group Recording of the Year. The band was featured in the 2004 ECMA show as a 16 piece band with musicians from all the Atlantic Provinces playing an original entitled Ceilidh Cubano.
Music Nova Scotia’s Gala Award Show takes place on Sunday, November 7th at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets for the Gala Awards Show will be on sale Monday, September 20 for $29.99 (plus convenience fee) online at ticketpro.ca, via phone 1-888-311-9090 or in person at any Ticketpro outlet including:

Nova Scotia Music Week Yarmouth to Run on 100% Green Electricity
Molson Canadian Nova Scotia Music Week Yarmouth 2010 will be bullfrogpowered with 100% green electricity. This means that Bullfrog Power will inject renewable electricity onto the local Yarmouth grid to match music week’s event usage. Bullfrog’s electricity comes exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogoM program instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear power.

“This is a very exciting partnership,” says Music Nova Scotia executive director Scott Long. “Everyone needs to take responsibility when it comes to our environment, including our artists and industry professionals. Knowing that our energy usage during music week in Yarmouth will be matched with 100% green electricity makes me very proud of our organization and the event.”
Music Nova Scotia first implemented greening measures to its signature event in 2008 when hosted in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. It was at this edition of music week that paper inserts were first banned from delegate bags; reusable water containers were handed out to reduce the usage of bottled water and USB keys were given to every delegate to house files that were once paper items.
“At every conference I have ever attended, the first thing I did when I got back to my hotel room was dump out all of the paper promotional items - they don’t even get looked at,” comments Long. “Running music week on 100% green electricity takes our conference green plan to an entirely new level.”
Making the choice for clean, green power is a breeze. Bullfrog Power is available throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Thousands of Canadians have already chosen to bullfrogpower their homes, condos, apartments, offices and businesses. For more information visit Bullfrog Power on the web at www.bullfrogpower.com.

About the NSMW 2010 International Conference Buyers:
International Buyers and Conference Panellists
Steve Mayall (UK) – Music Ally (Conference Designers)
Steve Mayall is MusicAlly's mobile expert. He has previously worked as a senior analyst for the Informa Telecoms and Media group focusing on the global mobile media market, where he co-authored the last three annual executive reports on mobile music. Prior to that he worked in business development for the Somethin' Else group where he was involved in developing Europe's first ever music service over early WAP phones, and also worked at the MCPS PRS Alliance providing intelligence on digital music at the end of the nineties
Ryan McCann (UK) – Music Ally
Ryan is both the editor of Sandbox, Music Ally’s specialist digital music marketing publication, and manages Music Ally’s digital marketing activities. Ryan was previously digital marketing coordinator at Rough Trade Records, where he managed a number of successful digital campaigns. As a writer he was responsible for all copy at RoughTradeRecords.com, artist press releases and also worked as a freelance music journalist for The Stool Pigeon. Campaigns Ryan has worked on have included Jarvis Cocker, Antony & the Johnsons, Super Furry Animals, The Hold Steady, The Libertines, My Morning Jacket, Micachu & the Shapes, British Sea Power and more
Peter Jenner (UK) – Sincere Management
After gaining a First Class Honours Degree in Economics at Cambridge University, Peter Jenner became a Lecturer at the London School of Economics at the tender age of twenty-one. His career in academia lasted four years after which he left to devote his attention to managing an up-and-coming modern music group that had caught his attention. The band's name was Pink Floyd. Jenner then put on a series of free concerts in London's Hyde Park that culminated with The Rolling Stones in 1969. Now, after more than forty years in the music business, the list of clients he has worked with reads like a Who's Who of musical successes. He has managed Tyrannosaurus Rex (fronted by Marc Bolan), helped set up Harvest Records and produced and managed many of its bands - notably Roy Harper, The Edgar Broughton Band and Kevin Ayers. He then on went to manage and produce Ian Dury and the Blockheads and manage The Clash, The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Michael Franti, Robyn Hitchcock, Eddi Reader and Baaba Maal, amongst others. Currently, Jenner manages Billy Bragg's career and has done so for more than twenty five years. He is President Emeritus of the IMMF, a director of the UK MMF (Music Managers' Forum) and on the advisory board of The Featured Artists Coalition. Jenner has also taken an active role in discussions on future digital music delivery systems and payment to artists, in many countries. He has an overriding interest in securing artists rights and their income from these rights and has spoken frequently and publicly on the subject. In 2006, Jenner courted controversy with a seminal paper and subsequent conference called ‘Beyond the Soundbytes’. Here, he proposed an ‘Access to Music Charge’ that he saw as some small compensation for artists, in addition to removing the attraction of using unauthorised sites in the digital environment (such as Limewire and Pirate Bay). However he accepts that the Control of Copyright is no longer a practical approach and that the challenge has become getting appropriate remuneration for the digital use of music.
Benji Rogers (UK) – Pledge Music
Benji Rogers is an independent musician from London England who has been making his own records since 1999. Through PledgeMusic Benji will be releasing his 5th independent record under the name Marwood. Benji has been on tour with his band and as a solo artist with relatively few breaks since 2001 in both the US and Europe. With his mother, father and stepfather all having variously been managers, label owners, publishers and musicians, in the music industry he was literally born into it.

Since taking over A&R duties for Sony Canada’s domestic roster, his signings include ill Scarlett, Ash Koley (whose debut album will be released this spring), and Crash Parallel. Boggs holds a Marketing degree from Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. He is currently based in Toronto.
Suze Casey (CDN) – Calgary Folk Club
Suze is the artistic director for the Calgary Folk Club. The Calgary Folk Club is the largest folk club in Canada, now in its 39th season. Suze books top talent from Calgary and from around the world. Besides being an exceptional place to play, it is also a good place to listen to music. There is no bar service during performances so the focus remains on the music. And it has grown into a social event. People have sat at the same tables with the same people for years. Some bring their own food and they decorate their tables at Christmas. And as with most folk clubs, it would cease to exist without the volunteers. It started with the wives and families of the band members, but grew in numbers and professionalism. Suze first attended as an audience member in 1978 and started by stacking chairs at the end of the night. "We've built a community," she says. "It's become more than the music. It's a place like the world should be, when you're here." Casey, a former schoolteacher, now works professionally in music. She learned her trade at the club. Past legendary performances include Stan Rogers, Rita MacNeil, Tom Paxton and Odetta.
Kieran Hanrahan (Ireland) – Temple Bar Trad Festival
Kieran Hanrahan is an Irish radio host and high profile musician, born in Ennis, Co. Clare. He began playing traditional Irish music on the tenor banjo at the age of fourteen, and had won the All-Ireland banjo championship by the time he was eighteen. Over the years, Kieran has helped found a number of traditional bands, including Inchiquin, Stockton's Wing, and the Templehouse Ceili Band.
Kieran has hosted radio programs for the Irish national broadcaster RTÉ since 1991. Currently he hosts Céilí House, the anchor radio program on traditional Irish music aired weekly in Ireland on RTÉ Radio1.
In April 2009, Kieran was appointed Temple Bar Trad Festival programmer. Each year Temple Bar comes alive a series of festival concerts and a rich line up of musical performances, workshops, high quality street theatre, family events and much more in a celebration of traditional Irish music and culture. The 2009 festival featured such luminaries, as Kevin, Seamus and Paddy Glackin, Solas, Moya Brennan, Paddy Keenan, the Tulla Ceil Band and many other renowned artists. The Temple Bar TradFest 2010 will run from 27th-31st January. Now in its fifth year the festival will hope to build on its previous success. Having won the coveted title of “Best Traditional Music Festival” in the 2008 Irish Festival Awards the sky is the limit as far as festival organisers are concerned. The 2009 Trad Festival was organised by TASCQ and sponsored by Bushmills and Dublin City Council.
Cillian Stewart (Ireland) – Castlepalooza/Cherrycool Promotions
Cillian Stewart, Managing Director of Cherrycool Promotions, leapt from his successful post in sales at Newstalk radio station after seeing a gap in the Irish music market. He created the Castlepalooza Music & Arts Festival in August 2006 as an alternative choice for music fans - the beginning of four popular years of entertainment at the enchanting Charleville Castle, Tullamore, IRELAND. As Castle Palooza Festival Director, Cillian has staged bands from the legendary Sister Sledge to the more home grown Fight Like Apes, the Blizzards and David Kitt & this year sees Mercury Rev headline. He's championed new innovations in the Irish festival scene & continues his ambition to create the perfect festival. In 2007, Cillian created the Irish Festival Awards for Irish people to cast their vote on the events in the Irish music calendar. Castlepalooza is always excluded but has already being nominated twice in the UK Festival Awards for 'Best European Festival'. 2009 also saw it being nominated in the European Festival Awards for ‘Best Small Festival’. Instead of relaxing in his spare time, he enjoys running - but no, not the flat kind, Mountain Running is where it’s at!

About Nova Scotia Music Week (NSMW):
Now in its 14th year, Molson Canadian Nova Scotia Music Week brings together the music industry and the public for four jam-packed days of performances, music industry conference, international and domestic buyers programs, and the gala awards show. Music Nova Scotia is proud to present Molson Canadian Nova Scotia Music Week 2010. The event will be held in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia from November 4-7, 2010.
About the NSMW 2010 Conference:
#1 Bands, Fans, and Brands
The Bands, Fans, and Brands track will focus how to monetize your content in the digital age. Topics of discussion will include new ways to license your music (new media, video games, advertising, and film/television), how to attract and engage audiences in the digital era, new ways to monetize the live show, and how artists and brands can innovatively join forces to create and strengthen brand awareness and raise artists’ visibility.
#2 Managers, Agents, and Labels
Track #2 of The New Music Experience conference brings together influential local, regional, national, and international managers, agents, and labels face-to-face to discuss new opportunities and challenges to develop an artists’ career through digital and social media platforms and how their roles are evolving in this context.
#3 Measuring ROI – Public and Private Investment in the Music Sector
Corporations no longer “sponsor” cultural events for the warm and fuzzies. They seek meaningful marketing partnerships with organizations that can increase their bottom line. Governments are facing more and more scrutiny from their constituents as they demand more accountability and transparency in the spending of tax dollars.
Track #3 is designed to provide essential insight and discussion on the new models of partnerships, both public and private, that require measuring tangible results to justify investment. ROI is becoming the most important component to securing funding and cultural industries must now be equipped with the appropriate tools to do so. Otherwise, your funding and business will face serious risks.

Last year, Yarmouth and its accommodations received nearly 700 conference delegates and opened its music venues to thousands of fans. Using figures and indicators provided by the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage, it is estimated that over $620,000 was generated in revenue in the host community by attending delegates and the local public. An additional $60,000 was spent directly by Music Nova Scotia on local goods and services. Artists earned more than $300,000 from business created at the festival. This makes Nova Scotia Music Week a million-dollar event.
“We’re just thrilled to be able to host it again this year,” said Karen MacKay, General Manager of the Rodd Grand, host hotel of Nova Scotia Music Week 2009. “This has been one of the best events we’ve ever had. It’s huge for the tourism factor and it’s huge for even the gas stations in town to have all these people in our communities. Anytime of the year is great, but November is perfect because it’s one of the slowest months. This is the brightest piece of news we’ve had in a long time…since last November!”
Laura Muise is the General Manager of Rudder’s Restaurant, a music venue during Nova Scotia Music Week 2009. She also was delighted with the announcement.
“It means a lot to the businesses in Yarmouth. The mood has been very sad since we’ve been dealing with the loss of the ferry link. So to hear this news is just fabulous.”
Music Nova Scotia’s Executive Director Scott Long said last year’s Nova Scotia Music Week in Yarmouth was the most successful to date.
“Nova Scotia Music Week is becoming not just a great celebration for fans and musicians, but a serious place to do business. This year, we will be expanding our lucrative international buyers program and making this a truly global event.”
The host location was selected after an open call for submissions. After review, Yarmouth demonstrated the best infrastructure and readiness to host the four-day event this year.
