2011 Grand Prize Winner John Lennon Song Contest Folk Category 2011 ECMA NOMINEE: Female Solo Recording of the Year Pop Recording of the Year Rising Star Recording of the Year If there’s any romance left in the old State highways. If there’s still a story in the Trans Canada. If there’s a legend to be found in a cluttered old bookstore, a crowded coffeehouse, or a stranger’s conversation. If there’s any power left in a folk song, Carmel Mikol is out to find it. And write about it. A triple nominee at the 2011 East Coast Music Awards, Carmel has always been a songwriter. From her early childhood on a family farm in rural Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, to her current "home" on the road, Carmel has built her life around crafting songs, collecting stories, and carving poetry out of the human experience. After two years touring extensively across Canada and the US with her celebrated debut album "In My Bones", Carmel returned home to Cape Breton in 2011 to create her newest recording "Creature". "Creature" was recorded live off the floor with Carmel's band at the award-winning Lakewind Sound Studio and was released June 28th, 2011 (Sound of Pop/Fontana North). Carmel has been welcomed into the inner circle of Canadian folk music, sharing stages with Dave Gunning, David Francey, Garnet Rogers, Connie Kaldor, Meaghan Smith, and Matt Andersen, and has become a festival favourite in Atlantic Canada and the US (Lunenburg Folk Harbour, Deep Roots Music Festival, Celtic Colours, 30A Songwriters Festival). She recently took Grand Prize in the John Lennon Song Contest Folk Category for her song "Twenty Something Girl". In 2010 she won the folk category of the Great American Song Contest for "In My Bones" and the ISSA Song Contest folk category for "Sunny Days". Her song "Blaming Myself" hit #1 on the East Coast Countdown and she has been featured in CBC's Studio H for Concerts on Demand. She is an official showcase artist at the 2010/2011 East Coast Music Awards and the 2009/2010 Molson Canadian Nova Scotia Music Week Conference and has steadily built a strong following with her unique, intimate live performance style. This year Carmel hits the road in support of "Creature", hitting major markets across Canada and the US. Connect with Carmel at www.carmelmikol.com
