Dylan Guthro
2012 saw the release of Dylan Guthro’s debut recording All That’s True. The record leaves no doubt that this talented singer-songwriter has a very bright future. The songs are solid and sincere, the musicianship superb. Thoughtfully produced by music veterans Bruce Guthro and Dave Gunning at Wee House of Music, All That’s True is an outstanding first effort for such a young artist. The fact that Dylan Guthro was brought up in a musical household is quite evident. He picked up his first guitar at the age of four and has since toured with his dad, the internationally renowned Bruce Guthro, as far afield as the prestigious Tonder Festival in Denmark and as close to home as the Stan Rogers Folk Festival. The experience has obviously helped Dylan hone his skills as a musician; his electric guitar work on the track “Quicksand” is more than worthy of a David Gilmour comparison, while the entire record showcases his stellar acoustic guitar playing. Musicians who appear on the record include Brian Talbot (Slowcoaster), Kevin Fox, producers Dave Gunning and Bruce Guthro, vocalist Breagh McKinnon, and Dylan, rounding things out on bass guitar. The songs are a balance of Dylan's songwriting (including the quirky and irresistible “Mary Jane”) and his co-writing with others. The closing track on the record, “Love Takes Priority,” is a family affair, co-written by Dylan, his dad, and his younger sister Jodi. And, the stunning duet “Sing to Me” with Breagh is a co-write from Dylan's time spent last summer at the Gordie Sampson Songcamp. The resulting body of work is reflective of Dylan himself – brimming with musicality, full of integrity and immediately likeable. All That’s True charged out of the gate earlier this year with two sold-out shows in Halifax and the record earned Dylan a Music Nova Scotia Award for New Artist Recording of the Year. Dylan spent the summer touring in the East Coast of Canada with festivals and shows in PEI, NS, and NB and completed a four-week tour in Denmark and Germany, where his record was released earlier this year.
