Kestrels.

KESTRELS are an award winning trio from Halifax, Nova Scotia consisting of Chad Peck (vocals, guitar), Kirstan Moore (bass), and Paul Brown (drums). After previously releasing a 7” (“Seaside” b/w “On Our Time”) and an LP (Primary Colours) on Noyes Records, they have returned with their latest effort, The Solipsist, a four song EP released on 8 March 2011. The record is a limited pressing: 100 copies on transparent blue and 200 on black. It is a stop-gap precursor to their next LP (release date: July 2011) and sees the band building on the momentum and promise of Primary Colours: the hazy fade-in to first single “The Light” harkens back to early 90s Creation Records before turning into a full-out fuzz war about missed opportunities. “What Happens” takes loud/quiet/loud to the extreme and showcases the band’s songwriting prowess. “Dead Time” started as a simple folk song, but morphed into a shoegaze/Neutral Milk Hotel/Sonic Youth hybrid and is a staple of the band’s live show. The EP ends with a triumphant take on Black Tambourine’s “Throw Aggi Off the Bridge”, recorded at their rehearsal space in the dark winter of 2009. Kestrels have not created a wall of sound, but rather a wall of noise. Drums crash, bass swells and guitars howl while notes bend in cacophony. Through it all, melodies shine and you are left with the distinct impression that noise has never sounded quite so good. For more information on Kestrels, be sure to visit http://www.kestrels.ca or http://www.noyesrecords.com, follow them on twitter (@kestrelshfx). The Solipsistwill be available through Sonic Unyon (Canada), Stickfigure Distribution (USA), and Assymetrie (Germany) as well as at live shows across the country. Kestrels are: Chad Peck (guitar/vocals) Kirstan Moore (bass) Paul Brown (drums)
