Amelia Curran is a seeker. Nearly a decade ago she left St. John’s for Halifax, but still pines for Newfoundland every single day. With a number of East Coast Music Award nominations and an extensive discography, including: War Brides (2006), Lullaby for Barflies (2002), Trip Down Little Road (2001), and Barricade (2000), Curran knew it was finally time to make a record at home.

Banded Stilts

The group is composed nebulously of one to five musician(s) and they boast of an instrumental barrage that includes drums, acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, keys, violin, fiddle and, of course, the sublime and haunting vocals of Steve Haley. The new and growing “banded stilts” are looking to fill their 2011 calendar with musical madness and you are invited to join in the healthy insanity. Stay tuned and, in the meantime, keep your feet from touching the ground by way of the “banded stilts.”

Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers are primarily a folk group with major jazz and Eastern European influences. Their music has flavours of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and European folk traditions. They tend to enter a song through the backdoor and do the unexpected. They are known for powerful vocals.

 

Black Moor

Performing: Friday April 15th at 1:20am @ The Loud Stage - Ise's, 449 University Avenue

Born in the Fall of 2005, Black Moor is a metal band hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Composed of Eric Hanlin on guitar and lead vocals, Nick Jones on lead guitar, Sylvain Coderre on drums and Rob Nickerson on bass, the band has gradually evolved into something bordering on obsession for four like-minded musicians. Drawing inspiration from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, 80’s thrash and some progressive rock, Black Moor plays melody driven metal that has often been likened to a cross between Iron Maiden and Megadeth.

 

Breagh MacKinnon

Breagh MacKinnon's songwriting and unique folk-rock guitar stylings have character and depth beyond her years. Her influences range from: Iron and Wine to Ella Fitzgerald.

Listeners will be reminded of such singers as Shawn Colvin, Bruce Cockburn & Joni Mitchell. Like them, Miller's vocals, lyrics and undeniable guitar skills are not to be underestimated. When Miller sings & plays, it has the same effect as someone looking you straight in the eye. You believe her. Brooke is currently taking some time off the road while recording and producing her third album. Look for a release, followed by a German Tour in Summer of 2011.

Buddy's career as a singer, song-writer, entertainer, began thirty years ago. Born and brought up on the Northern Shores of Cape Breton Island, he was exposed at an early age, to the singing and story telling of some of the great Celtic singers of his native Island.

With a complete, super charged E-Street orchestration, yoked to the lyrical wit and conviction of a Ryan Adams or Elvis Costello, Carleton Stone Drives the Big Wheel has concocted the perfect hit-maker balance of passion, originality and relentless live energy.

 

Carmel Mikol

Carmel Mikol writes songs that stand on their own. Delivered in a sometimes tentative, sometimes courageous voice, her meticulously crafted lyrics traverse both the personal and the political, referencing beat poets and folk troubadours of a generation not her own. Her debut album ‘In My Bones’ (March 2010) has been nominated for three 2011 East Coast Music Awards (Female Solo Recording, Pop Recording, Rising Star Recording) and the title track took home the first place prize in the Folk Category of the 2010 Great American Song Contest.

You can call Carmen Townsend’s music many things, but reserved isn’t one of them. As polite as she may be in person, within Townsend lives a voice much louder than she lets on in conversation. It’s one that manifests itself onstage through her raucous live sets, full of an intensity that has been building throughout Townsend’s career as a musician.

Lingering somewhere amidst the rich, soulful roots of traditional Cape Breton music and the grooves of a thousand branches of rock and funk, Colin Grant embarks on his latest project: a dynamic and thoughtful mingling of beats and melodies from an extensive host of musical influences. Far from the awkward malaise of mohawked bag-pipers and kilted punks, the Colin Grant Band has created a kind of Celtic fusion that is as much Steely Dan and Yes as it is Ashley MacIsaac.

Craig Mercer and The Willbegones

After performing countless shows in The Jimmy Swift Band over the past eight years, Craig Mercer found himself sitting on a whole bunch of songs that didn’t fit the mold of dance rock that JSB is known for. After a jam with his friends in the band Deerfield turned out to be just too much fun, Craig Mercer and the Will Be Gones were born - honest, soulful songs with heartfelt lyrics that show a different side of this established musician.
